City Island: Out of Long Island Sound, Into the Fryer

A couple of weeks ago we took a day trip to City Island, one of the most weirdly unique and charming places in the city. The island is a completely obscure enclave located just off the Bronx, an old fishing community filled with adorable small houses, tiny beaches, a creepy cemetery, and seafood restaurants. We walked amongst the graves, searched for shells and sea glass on a beach so small it might not even count, and almost froze to death trying to get the kite to fly with a fly fishing rod. After working up an appetite for a seafood feast, we went to Johnny's Famous and ended up in a zoo for Bronx locals with a taste for fry batter. After a few too many donuts in an empty lot, we headed back in a cloud of mist to fall asleep with a bottle of wine, watching Blue Velvet. To be fair, only I fell asleep.
